Recognizing and Treating Oral Thrush Oral thrush, also known oral candidiasis, is a condition that occurs when a fungus called Candida albicans builds up on the lining of your mouth. Anyone can develop oral thrush, but babies, young children, older adults, or anyone with a compromised immune system due to an illness such as HIV are more susceptible. Conversely, candidiasis lesions can be an early sign of an HIV infection. The main symptom of oral thrush is creamy white lesions in the mouth, usually on the tongue or inner cheeks. In some cases, the lesions may appear on the roof of the mouth or on the back of the throat. Interestingly, oral thrush is not caused by poor oral hygiene. Thrush is caused when the naturally occurring fungi in the body get out of balance, which is why the very old, very young, and people with weak immune systems are at higher risk. Good oral hygiene, however, is an essential part of treating oral thrush. Healthy adults and children can recover fairly easily from the infection, especially if they follow a complete oral care routine of twice-daily tooth brushing and daily proper flossing. Hygiene Visits for Good Health Getting your teeth the cleanest they can be not only maintains the health of your teeth, but the overall health of your entire body. If plaque builds up and hardens into tartar, brushing and flossing will not remove it. This can lead to cavities and, more seriously, if it accumulates in pockets in the gums, you risk more dire consequences. Medical research has proven that untreated gum disease plays a role in heart disease, diabetes, and stroke. We recommend professional teeth cleaning by our hygienists to help you stay healthy! We have a friendly and relaxed atmosphere at our practice that makes it
easy for children to feel comfortable during their visits. We use the
latest techniques that result in less time in the dental chair. We also
teach good daily dental care, so they understand how important this is for
a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums. We enjoy all their visits, starting
at age one and every year thereafter as they grow up.
It is our
goal to have children enjoy their visits rather than be afraid of dental
care. We strive to make all young patients feel calm, whether they are
nervous or simply very active. Our parents have let us know we have been
very good at achieving this goal!
The Number One Reason for Missing Teeth Although the general assumption is that most people lose teeth because of decay, the real reason is gum disease. You may have infected gums and not realise it until the infection has reached an advanced state. Symptoms are bleeding gums from brushing or flossing and loose teeth. If detected and treated in the early stages, nonsurgical methods can successfully treat the problem. Gum Disease Can Have a Serious Effect on Your Overall HealthIt is a startling conclusion reached by medical researchers, but gum disease affects serious health conditions like stroke, diabetes, and heart disease. Dental associations assert that 80% of adults have gum infection! Dentists regard this percentage to be an epidemic, especially now that gum disease is a much more serious problem than losing your teeth. The bacteria affecting the gums travels in the blood throughout the body, reaching vital organs and causing them potential harm.
Experts in periodontology report that "studies found periodontal infection may contribute to the development of heart disease, increase the risk of premature, underweight births, and pose a serious threat to people whose health is already compromised due to diabetes and respiratory diseases."
There is Good News for Gum Disease Sufferers If you wait until your gum infection is chronic, surgery may be the only option. It usually controls the problem and is covered by most insurance plans. When treatment is given for milder stages of the infection, nonsurgical procedures are effective in combating the disease. Additionally, with improved daily care, the spread of the bacteria will be stopped and the gums will return to a clean state of health. Nonsurgical treatments are usually covered by insurance plans as well. Replace Missing Teeth to Avoid Other Problems The other problems that can result include unclear speech, a "sunken" look to your face that adds years to your age, weight gain from the inability to chew healthier foods, and diminished ability to obtain nutrients from food. Other teeth may start to loosen or shift without the support of a full dental arch.
With today's technology, you can replace one or many missing teeth with dental implants. They give a life-like appearance and look just like natural teeth as they come up through the gums. They function like real teeth and resolve all the problems you can experience from loss of teeth.
You May Not Need Gum Surgery With the use of a laser, you may not need to have surgery for gum disease. The laser is an almost miraculous technology that produces amazing results in minimally invasive procedures that are easy for patients. This advancement is virtually painless and successfully eliminates the need for surgery in most cases. It is FDA-approved and safe. Relax, and Your Treatment Will Be Done Before You Know It! Times have changed, and no patient has to be filled with anxiety over a dental appointment. We have two options available that can either take the edge off your stress or fully ease you through your treatment in such a state of relaxation, you won't even remember the work being done.
The first option is nitrous oxide, or laughing gas. You inhale the gas through a mask, and as you breathe in the medication, it induces a mild state of relaxation. Local anaesthetic is administered to eliminate pain, as well. Once your treatment is over, the effects of the nitrous oxide wear off quickly, and you can safely drive yourself home or to work without the need of an escort.
For patients who are more dentally challenged or who have extensive work that they want to have completed in one visit, we offer oral conscious sedation. You take one pill about an hour before your appointment and begin to feel relaxed. Gradually, you obtain a deeper level of sedation, but you are still conscious of your environment. Your vital signs are monitored during the procedure. After the treatment is over, someone will drive you home. Within an hour, you are completely alert. You won't be completely "knocked out" as for surgery. Some patients have an even greater fear of losing control, but conscious sedation relieves that problem too, as it provides a happy medium of losing fear but not total consciousness.
We want all patients to feel relaxed, and we achieve this goal for every patient's visit! We look forward to working with you to provide you with quality dental care in a comfortable, relaxed manner. Broadway Dental Care 640 Broadway Winnipeg, MB R3C 0X3 (204) 772-3523 WestBroadwayDental.com

The Ideal Replacement for Missing Teeth Missing teeth can cause a multitude of problems, so we recommend dental implants to replace however many teeth you have lost. They will give you the ability to once again eat any foods you choose and regain a healthy and beautiful smile. They look very natural, as they come up through the gums, just like real teeth.
Dental implants also help those with no teeth. They snugly anchor dentures, taking care of the problems that slipping and other movements make for the wearer. Another benefit is that you no longer have to remove them at night.
From implanting the post to making and placing the crown, we take care of the entire procedure from start to finish. You will be pleased that your implants function like real teeth and amazed how quick and efficient the procedure is. Perfectly Fitting Crowns Made While You Wait You know the routine. You visit the dentist. You need a crown. The dentist prepares the tooth, takes an impression and installs a temporary crown. You then wait two weeks to return to the dentist, and he installs the permanent crown. And if the fit isn't perfect, then it goes back to the lab and you wait again. And return to the dentist again.
But now, that's all changed. Our doctors can reduce that two-week waiting period and the two or three office visits down to just a single visit with new technology! This new technology is called CEREC™.
CEREC is a computerised system that lets our dentists design an accurately fitting crown. It also fabricates the crown in just minutes, while you wait. We use the most advanced materials to give you a long-lasting, aesthetically pleasing crown.
The procedure is easy. With a special camera, a life-like picture is taken of the tooth. The image is then viewed on our computer screen. The dentist designs the crown, and CEREC creates it. The crown is bonded to the tooth, and what could be quicker, easier, and less time in the dentist's chair than that?
